Q: I have an eleven month old. For about a month now the only solid food
she'll eat is toasted oat cereal (Cheerios). We offer her food at least
twice a day and she turns her head or pushes the spoon away. We have
tried various foods and textures to no avail. We have also given her the
chance to feed herself without success. I enjoy breastfeeding her,
however, I would like her to wean herself before she starts college. :o)

A: We call this a "food jag" and see it in children who are usually older
than your eleven month old. Try to just ignore it for a while
longer---but keep on trying different foods--especially textures and
colors that might entice her to try them. And, show her how much mommy
and daddy like the crackers and peanut butter, or pieces of fruit dipped
in yogurt, etc. I think she is probably getting enough nourishment from
the breastmilk and the cheerios. Encourage her to drink from a cup, and
try a variety of juices there. Kids learn from an early age what pushes our buttons, so don't
let this become an issue that she can use her eating to manipulate you
or "get you excited" when she doesn't do what you want her to. Just
very matter-of-factly, keep giving her other things. I would probably
try to give her table from the food when she is hungriest, not after
breastfeeding. |
