Hypnobirthing
By Pheobe Simkins

HypnoBirthing has been getting a lot of attention lately from the media (Dateline NBC in September 1999 and A Baby Story on TLC in December 2000) and from many, many moms who are eager to experience the joy and wonder of giving birth, but are not at all enthusiastic about the traditional methods which involved drugs or epidurals. Dads are also excited about HypnoBirthing because they can now learn a method that not only enhances their bonding experience with both their partner and baby, but also relieves the stress of having to watch their loved one fear their upcoming birth.

HypnoBirthing prepares the mind and body to be totally relaxed, eliminating the fear and tension that cause pain. Moms are reporting shorter labors, little or no discomfort, and a more rapid postnatal recovery.

HypnoBirthing incorporates the process of self-hypnosis with the naturally occurring events happening in a woman's body during labor and birth. By choosing this method of childbirth, women learn how their bodies work for them and not against them. Once this concept is understood, the fears and tension related to their birthing can be eliminated. It is this fear and tension that moms interpret as pain. By keeping the mind and body in complete relaxation, the body's own natural anesthesia (endorphins) replaces the stress hormones that create pain. Moms can also shorten the entire birthing process by simply eliminating the fear and tension factors.

There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus. When having a baby using HypnoBirthing, what women experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when one is engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. Mom will be conversant and in good spirits - totally relaxed, but fully in control. She will experience her birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. With this powerful tool she can maintain this relaxation without drugs or epidural, both of which can be harmful to her and her baby.

Couples truly enjoy HypnoBirthings four two and half hour sessions. They get to experience self-hypnosis in each class so they can feel what it is like to be completely relaxed and in harmony with their body and baby.
