momto4g1b's Story
Balen
12/7/2000
I had always been thinking that December 6th was a good day to birth the new
baby. It is St. Nicholas Day as well as my "due date" based on conception. I
woke w/ the girls telling me about the their gift from St. Nicholas. I was
still pregnant. Ugg. That evening I took the girls to 4-H to build their
gingerbread houses. I was tired b/c I had had only a 20 minute nap that
afternoon. Jeff, my husband, was at school. I was planning to leave soon,
but Jeff arrived at the 4-H buliding. His class had been canceled. I was
relieved b/c he would be there to help put the kids to bed. So, we left for
home. We put the kids to bed and Jeff went to bed early b/c he had to be at
work at 5:00am the next day. I stayed up to read some and the turned out the
light. As I was drifting off I felt a contrax, tightening, but slight
discomfort in my back. I thought hmmm. I had another so I thought I'd time
them. They were about 5 minutes apart. My first thought was I am too tired
to do this and worried about the pain, but then I was telling myself to
relax, open, I have no choice, LOL. I woke Jeff at midnight. He called work
and then got busy setting up the pool, making up the bed, and setting out
supplies that might be needed. I was meandering around not able to sit. We
had on the T.V. and I'd watch while walking around the room. Pool was a
third way filled and it was sounding very good to get in soon. We started
watching a movie I had rented the day before. A bit later the pool was
filled enough and I got in. It felt delicious. It was a bit too hot so we
added some cold. Watched more movie. I was starting to feel more discomfort.
I could feel Balen stretching me w/ each contrax. I was wondering how far
apart they were so I had dh get my watch. I timed and they were around two
minutes apart. It was about 2:35am. I could no longer focus on the movie.
Jeff turned it off. He was sitting outside the tub. I was starting to feel a
wee bit pushy. Found myself pushing a bit w/ each contrax. I felt to see if
I was fully dialated. I could not reach. Balen was at 0 station is all I
could tell. Feeling more pushy w/ each contrax. Hmm, I was feeling I needed
to know, so I got out to have Jeff see. He said he could still feel a bit
around Balen's head. I said I had to push anyway. I could not stop. I had
two contraxs while out of the pool. They were 10 times worse. I thought I
could never do this at the hospital w/ no pool and people and procedures. I
got right back in the pool. Started pushing earnestly. I asked Jeff to turn
on the video camera. We have taped all the babies births and I sure didn't
want to miss this one. A few more contraxs and I was saying, "Oh God" over
and over. It was hurting tremendously. Jeff said, "I know it hurts." I told
him there is no way he knows, he will never know. W/ my next contrax I heard
a huge pop and saw my water break under water. Never went so long w/ intact
waters before. Next contrax his head was out. And next his body. I pulled
him up and immediately thought to check the sex. A boy!!!! How amazed we
were! He immediately started peeing in the pool. He was crying, but would
stop and hold his breath. I discovered his cord was around his body and neck
and as I was moving him the cord was choking him. I untangled him. He was
gurgly so Jeff brought the bulb suction. I sucked a bit of mucous out of his
mouth. He was so cute. Just a couple of minutes later I had a bad contrax.
Jeff asked if it was another baby, LOL. I felt, but it was the placenta. It
was coming so quickly, I was surprised. I had intended to birth the placenta
in a bowl b/c it is easier to see blood loss. But that was not the plan. It
came right out w/ membranes lagging. I pulled on then to get them out. We
were now in a pool of blood. Although normal, it looked rather yucky. I
wanted out. Jeff got the big bowl I had intended to birth the placenta in.
He scooped it up and put it in the bowl. I carried Balen out while he
carried the bowl. I sat on the bed and the bowl w/ the placenta sat next to
us. Jeff went to fetch the three older girls. I checked the clock, about
3:20am. We are guessing he arrived at 3:15am. The girls had wanted to see
the birth, but I needed Jeff to stay w/ and not leave to wake them. They
were so cute. Arden is like a little mother and she cried. I felt the cord
and it was cold and white, so we clamped it and cut. Checked and there were
three vessels in the cord as there is supposed to be. I nursed him and then
we weighed and measured Balen. He weighed 9lbs 2oz and was 21" long. His
head was about 15". We sent the girls back to bed. I dressed myself and
Balen while Jeff picked up. We all got in bed. Jeff fell asleep right away,
but I couldn't sleep. I was so giddy and high from the excitement. I went on
the internet to share our news w/ everyone. Around 8am all the girls came in
and Taegan's face dropped when she saw the baby. She would not come on the
bed to nurse. I handed Balen over to Jeff and then she came up. I nursed
her. She went to eat breakfast w/ everyone else and I slept. Later Taegan
came in again and said the baby was a "yucky thing". She has since warmed up
to Balen and loves to hug him.......to death. By our planning and God's
grace we were blessed w/ a beautiful birth and a delicious little baby boy.
